In a collaborative effort between our team, Ware Malcomb, and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare Facility in San Diego, we embarked on a transformative project to create a calming and welcoming space for veterans and healthcare professionals.
Tasked with designing large, preserved planter inserts for the lobby of this modern, double-height space, our goal was to seamlessly integrate biophilic elements to cultivate a serene atmosphere that supports the healing journey of those who enter from the sliding doors into this 130,000 SF medical office building.
Collaborative Vision and Understanding the Importance of Biophilic Design:
Ware Malcomb envisioned a space with fluidity and openness, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces with the planter inserts serving as focal point, enveloping visitors and healthcare professionals in a lush oasis of calm. Recognizing the profound impact of nature on well-being, our collaborative team embraced the principles of biophilic design to craft a space that fosters tranquility and connection to the natural world. Drawing on our expertise, we curated a selection of plant species known for their aesthetic appeal and therapeutic benefits. Through iterative design discussions, we refined the concept to ensure it met the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.
Implementation:
With the design finalized, our collaborative team worked in harmony with the General Contractor to bring the vision to life. With field verification and fabrication completed, we proceed with the meticulous crafting of each planter insert – 36 pieces total – to seamlessly create a large composition creating the transition between nature and built environment. Each planter insert was thoughtfully positioned for the installation that allowed for the touch-up and micro-mossing to take place to complete the optimization of the visual impact and create a sense of tranquility within the space.
Outcome:
The unveiling of the biophilic lobby transformation was met with acclaim from veterans, healthcare professionals, and visitors alike. The collaborative effort between our team, Ware Malcomb, and the VA Healthcare Facility resulted in a space that honors the sacrifices of our veterans while providing a sanctuary of tranquility amidst the challenges of healthcare. Visitors entering the space are immediately enveloped in a welcoming embrace of nature, setting the tone for their healing journey.
