High above the check-in area and security screening lanes, these gardens span 105 feet in length, and reach over 9 feet high each, making them the largest preserved garden installations in the world. The intricate designs of these gardens’ preserved flora tell a story unique to Nashville and its airport, showcasing local landmark bridges, while also weaving in sound motifs of the music of Nashville and abstract representations of rivers and the rolling hills and valleys surrounding the city.  But how did these gardens come to be? Needless to say there were many stages involved, and many parties contributed to this amazing and award-winning creation. Let’s take a look at the journey that led to these stunning gardens taking flight!
From first consultation, to liftoff
It all started with a consultation. Our initial contact regarding the 'BNA Grand Lobby Project' and the incorporation of large-scale garden walls happened back in 2018 when the Corgan team reached out to us. They were keen on utilizing preserved gardens instead of living walls to overcome maintenance challenges. First of all, we truly embraced their vision of integrating biophilia into this space, aiming to create an immersive experience of nature. It is widely recognized that we as humans spend a significant amount of time indoors, often exceeding 90 percent. Those who have enjoyed the serenity of a forest or meadow are familiar with the profound sense of well-being that nature instills. Research indicates that incorporating biophilic design indoors not only enhances morale but also leads to lowered blood pressure, reduced stress levels, and fewer mood swings. What more desirable outcome could one hope for in an interior display within an airport security area? So through detailed communication, we made it evident that our turn-key garden installations checked all the boxes for sustainability, material health, and safety, backed by our third-party verified credentials. Furthermore, we assured them of our expertise in project management to ensure seamless integration, the true turn-key nature of our installation services and of course, the longevity of our designed and furnished gardens.
Imagining the Design
Fast forward to 2022, we had the opportunity to reconnect with the Corgan team, accompanied by the BNA curator. Their vision for the garden walls had evolved beyond simple captures of the surrounding nature. They desired artistic representations that would encapsulate Nashville's vibrant culture and diversity. Excited by the prospect, our design team eagerly delved into this endeavor. We started by immersing ourselves in understanding what Nashville and its airport symbolized for travelers, as well as comprehending Corgan's vision for the extraordinary lobby space. The goal was to seamlessly blend art and nature into two cohesive designs, intended to be showcased at the security screening area. As we looked for inspiration, we were captivated by the beautiful Cumberland River, winding through Nashville with its green banks and rolling hills. It inspired us to create vibrant gardens that celebrated the city's culture and diversity. In our first drafts, we played with abstract patterns inspired by the music of Nashville and included representations of rivers and hills. We also had an option with a preserved plant design of a local landmark, which turned out to be the favorite. During our revisions, we had a realization. We noticed the significance of two famous bridges in Nashville: the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge. These bridges were like anchors in the landscape, leaving a lasting impression. We thought it would be great to incorporate their essence into our artwork, seamlessly blending art, nature, and the spirit of those iconic structures.
Bridging Art & Nature, Connecting People
So these gardens eventually were not designed to mimic a living wall, or a typical topography, rather as art pieces reflecting local landmarks, telling stories of a specific Geography. As much as local visual concepts are used in these stories, the main theme in these two gardens are the “Bridges” that represent the connection between two geographical location, just like airports can be considered as bridges to bring people together, make connections between two far locations. NA Nashville Airport is a bridge to the rest of the world, to other airports near and far, connecting travelers, businesspeople, families, and friends. And now it is embellished with 2,065 square feet of preserved gardens. We’re so proud of this impact. It's fascinating how our journey of inspiration ultimately led us to the airport itself, where our biophilic artwork would be proudly showcased. We couldn't help but draw parallels between the airport's role in facilitating connections and the function of those iconic bridges as connectors within the natural landscape. It was a remarkable alignment of concepts. And so, our collaboration with the Corgan team evolved from their initial consideration of preserved gardens to the realization of a design that harmoniously blends art, nature, and the vibrant spirit of Nashville. We're genuinely thrilled to have brought these visions to life in the 'BNA Grand Lobby Project'.
Installation
And from there, we really got into the weeds! Countless hours of design, planning, fabrication, consultations with architects and general contractors, numerous on-site visits, and more followed. But what beautiful interior installation built to impact and influence countless lives and last for years, doesn’t require the same time, dedication, and passion?
What makes this garden so special?
Our biophilic artwork is in all-natural green hues to signify the bucolic beauty of the remarkable area surrounding the city, as well as the commitment to biophilia and sustainability that connects us. With biodiverse species in varying hues, layers, and textures, these expansive gardens comprise a wholly sustainable, all-natural installation from project takeoff to landing, requiring no maintenance along the way, nor any carbon offset either! These gardens are composed of a wide range of preserved moss species and preserved plant species such as forest species, fern species, and even some flower foliage (Hydrangeas) to bring some additional color to this busy airport where 20 plus million passengers go through every year. With that, these gardens are the most public preserved gardens that will be enjoyed by over 400 million of people during their life-cycle. What a wonderful usage of preserved gardens, bringing the nature’s soothing effect to a high stress environment of a transportation hub. What’s more, these gardens got recognized in a big way! Our BNA garden was nominated for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards in the Best Large Airport category. Now that’s quite a high-profile recognition, and a great honor!
